Our History

greyfriars community centre external - front
Greyfriars is an eye-catching Georgian building opposite the Memorial Gardens in Christchurch Road, and the home of the Ringwood & District Community Association.

Built just prior to 1783, this grand house was privately owned until 1959, when the last owner, Miss Hilary Christie sold it at a generously low price to the Community Association – which had been newly formed the previous year. Her wish for it to be used as a community building for the benefit of Ringwood has definitely been fulfilled over the years, as the original building has gradually expanded to include a vibrant mix of modern halls and rooms.  Today, the complex has become an established regular meeting place for many clubs and societies and is often hired for private functions.

Ringwood & District Community Association, usually referred to as ‘Greyfriars’, is a registered charity, run by an Executive Committee of Honorary Trustees who entrust the day to day running of the Centre to a salaried staff of managers and caretakers.

The Centre receives no regular finance from local councils and is dependent on the income from hiring the halls, subscriptions from its members and the willing support of a large team of volunteers.
